Rehoboth Welsh Church News – February-March 2019

Rehoboth Welsh Church will not have Services during the period January 27- April 7, 2019 as it will be practicing energy conservation. The Weekly Services will resume on Palm Sunday, April 14, 2019, with the Sacrament of Holy Communion.

There will be special events occurring during this period:

On Saturday, February 16, Cor Cymraeg Rehoboth (Rehoboth Welsh Choir) will be performing at the Rose and Shamrock Festival at the Marriott Convention Center, 25 South Queen Street, Lancaster, PA at 4:00 PM.

On Monday, February 25, a High School Class from Ysgol Brynrefail, Llanrug, North Wales, will visit Rehoboth Welsh Church, Delta. This class comes from the same area of North Wales as most of the original Welsh settlers of Delta. They will be studying the experience of the Welsh immigrants to the United States and how they preserved elements of their culture. This will be the second such visit of Welsh students to Rehoboth in recent years.

And of course the plans are well underway for the special festivals at Rehoboth in 2019! Mark your calendars now for our Spring Gymanfa Ganu on Sunday, May 5, and our Fall Gymanfa Ganu on Sunday, October 13!
On May 5 Mari Morgan will be our Guest Conductor and Keith Trievel the accompanist. On October 13 Joe Corbin will be our Guest Conductor and John Owen III the accompanist. As always, there will be great congregational singing, special music, and delicious refreshments! Stay tuned!

An Important Announcement:
A Vision for the Future of Rehoboth Welsh Church!

Rehoboth Welsh Church in Delta, Pennsylvania, was founded in the mid-19th Century.  It has enjoyed success by vigorously continuing its Welsh Heritage while also adapting to changing circumstances.

It is now time for Rehoboth to adapt to the accelerating pace of change in the 21st Century.  Three factors are prominent in the present time:  First, the descendants of the Welsh immigrants who settled in Delta and founded Rehoboth are now mostly scattered all over the continent, leaving only a handful remaining in Delta.  Second, the explosive growth of information technology has begun the process of reuniting people with common interests no matter where they live.  Third, the power of the Welsh Hwyl has attracted the involvement of people with little previous experience with Welsh culture.  Old patterns have changed, but new opportunities now exist.

Rehoboth Welsh Church has for some time attracted interest and support from scores of people who are widely disbursed over the Mid-Atlantic area and beyond, and this support has been very helpful.   Rehoboth has a Gymanfa Ganu on the first Sunday in May and the second Sunday in October.  They are well attended and widely regarded as excellent.  Rehoboth also has an historic, well-preserved building and no indebtedness.  We want to keep this trend going.

We believe that there are many talented and dedicated people everywhere who want to see Rehoboth Welsh Church continue to grow.  We are offering them an opportunity to participate in forming its future by joining a new organization which we are going to establish, which will be called “The Rehoboth Welsh Heritage Preservation Partnership”.  Membership will be open to anyone who appreciates the Rehoboth Gymanfa Tradition and would like to help continue it.  Members of the Partnership could live anywhere and would not have to be members of Rehoboth Church.  Rehoboth Church will remain a congregation/church body, and would be the fiscal sponsor of the Partnership, thus extending to it the advantages of Section 501(c) (3) tax exemption.

We hope that you will be among those who would like to share in this adventure.  If you would like to be kept informed as this project develops, please feel free to contact any of the Rehoboth officers listed alphabetically below. Diolch yn fawr iawn, a Cymru am byth!
